Community Market Project Moves Into Next Phase

Planning progresses as the new Working Group begins site investigations, stakeholder engagement & feasibility discussions for Suffolk Park’s proposed community market.
The idea of a regular community farmers market for Suffolk Park continues to gather momentum, with the newly formed Suffolk Park Farmers Market Working Group now moving into the next phase of planning & development.
Following strong community interest through SPCA’s recent market survey, the project is now progressing from concept discussions into more detailed planning work, including:
The Working Group has been formally established as a subcommittee of the Suffolk Park Community Association, operating as a community-led incubator model designed to carefully develop the project through its establishment phase before determining any future operational structure.
The charter outlines a bigger vision for the initiative beyond simply creating another weekend market. The concept aims to support local growers, producers & artisans while also strengthening food resilience, sustainability, local economic activity & community connection.
Strong Community Support
The community response to the initial survey was overwhelmingly positive.

Many respondents also described the market as an opportunity to create a stronger sense of local connection within Suffolk Park.
One recurring theme throughout the feedback was the desire for more local gathering spaces where residents could meet informally, support local producers & reduce the need to travel outside the village.
The survey also highlighted practical community concerns that are now helping shape planning discussions, including traffic, parking, waste management & neighbourhood impacts.
These are the kinds of issues the Working Group is now actively investigating as part of the early feasibility process.
A Community-Led Approach
The Working Group is being coordinated by local resident Nicholas, alongside SPCA representatives & community contributors with experience across sustainability, logistics, events, agriculture & community development.
Rather than rushing toward a fixed outcome, the current focus is on carefully testing feasibility, listening to community feedback & understanding what type of market model could genuinely work for Suffolk Park long term.

These ideas also reflect broader localisation principles helping shape the vision for the project, with internationally recognised economist & localisation advocate Helena Norberg-Hodge contributing guidance around local food systems, community resilience & place-based economies.
As Norberg-Hodge has written:

What Happens Next?
The project remains in its early planning phase, with significant work still ahead before any final proposal or operational model is confirmed.
