Mayor Seeks Federal Funding To Unlock Southern Gateway Corridor Investment

A Mayoral Motion has now been formally submitted to Byron Shire Council seeking Disaster Ready Fund support for a Southern Gateway Corridor Integrated Resilience Study & Business Case.

The proposal is designed to do more than investigate local challenges. It aims to create a clear, evidence-based roadmap for future investment across Byron's southern gateway - helping position the region for significant state & federal funding opportunities.

The Southern Gateway Corridor includes many of the issues residents have consistently identified as priorities, including flooding, transport safety, emergency access, active transport connections, environmental health, coastal resilience & public spaces.

Earlier this year, Suffolk Park residents identified the Southern Gateway Corridor as a priority project through SPCA's community engagement process. The resulting community submission highlighted the need for a coordinated approach to planning rather than addressing each challenge in isolation.

If successful, the proposed study would identify practical projects, assess funding opportunities & develop a business case capable of attracting future investment for implementation.

This is an important milestone. While the motion does not approve any specific project, it represents a significant step towards securing the funding needed to deliver real improvements on the ground.

Council agendas are expected to become public approximately 10 days before the meeting. At that point, residents will have an opportunity to contact councillors & share their views before the motion is debated.
