Record online participation from Suffolk Park reflects SPCA’s shift to a more accessible, digital-first approach under the new committee
Suffolk Park has delivered one of the strongest community responses to Byron Shire Council’s infrastructure consultation, with residents highlighting a clear set of priorities around flooding, traffic, environmental health & community infrastructure.
Where Participation Came From
Council data shows Suffolk Park was the highest represented suburb in online responses, with participation significantly greater than other areas across the Shire.
A large proportion of responses related directly to local priorities, reinforcing the importance of ensuring Suffolk Park voices are clearly represented in planning processes.

These priorities reflect everyday experiences & a clear expectation that infrastructure keeps pace with how the community lives & moves.
Residents also emphasised the importance of planning for the future, ensuring investment supports long-term resilience while maintaining the character & accessibility of our village.
What The Data Shows
Community responses clearly highlight a strong focus on transport, connectivity & local infrastructure needs.
A Clear Priority: Clifford Street Intersection
One issue stood out clearly across both local feedback & broader shire-wide consultation. The need to improve safety at the Clifford Street & Broken Head Road intersection.
This location was identified as the number one priority for upgrade in both Council's report & the data collected by SPCA, reflecting both the volume of use & the risks experienced by residents, families & visitors.
The intersection presents ongoing challenges for pedestrians & cyclists. Limited sight lines around the corner & heavy traffic mean very few people attempt to cross directly. Instead, many move further along Broken Head Road in search of safer crossing points.
At peak times, congestion builds quickly, creating delays & increasing pressure on all road users. With more than 20,000 vehicle movements a day on Broken Head Road & 6,000 on Clifford Street, these combined pressures highlight the need for a long-term solution that improves both safety & traffic flow.

This outcome reflects a shift toward more community-led, digitally enabled engagement, making it easier for residents to understand issues & participate in decision-making processes.
What Happens Next
We are now at a critical juncture.
Byron Shire Council’s Operational Plan, Budget & financial plans are now open for submissions, creating a key opportunity to align community priorities with future funding & delivery.
This is where community input moves from feedback to formal planning.
Building on the strong participation & clear priorities identified through this consultation, we are currently preparing a detailed submission focused on the Suffolk Park southern gateway corridor. This work brings together intersection safety, traffic flow, drainage, flooding & environmental considerations as part of a single, coordinated infrastructure response.
As outlined in our submission work, this is not a standalone issue. It is a connected system where safety, movement, resilience & environmental outcomes intersect .
